Postion Description:

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is seeking an experienced executive to lead the school, the current President having elected to retire.

GSSM is a two-year, public, residential state-wide magnet high school for students talented in science and mathematics. The students are some of the most competitive and talented students in the State. Because of the outstanding education that the students obtain, there is a very large applicant pool to draw from, that ensures a highly qualified and diverse student body. All graduates attend college, and nearly 90% of alumni pursue post-graduate or professional degrees. A wide variety of college-level courses are offered in science, mathematics, economics and engineering, with an equally strong complement of offerings in the humanities. About 280 students are in residence, and various Outreach programs, including a college-level engineering program, reach over 4,000 students each year. The school is fully funded and fully enrolled, with a full complement of talented faculty and staff.

Requirements:

The Presidency requires an advanced degree, preferably in science, engineering or mathematics, with a terminal degree preferred. Five years’ experience in a senior leadership position is required, with both academic and business experience preferred.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to provide visionary leadership to senior academics in a collegial and participative manner. In addition to an understanding of science, he or she should have a sound understanding of the executive functions supporting the President, including finance, marketing, operations, human resources, community outreach and education. The President must interact effectively with people from all walks of life, from the Governor and members of the General Assembly, to college presidents, and to students, parents and the public at large.

Founded in 1988 under the leadership of former Governor Carroll Campbell and Charles W. Coker, then president of Sonoco Products Company, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics is an innovative high school for academically motivated juniors and seniors pursing studies in science, technology, engineering and math. The School located in Hartsville, South Carolina moved into a new, state of the art building in 2003 and in 2010, two new wings were added: the Academic Center and the Student Activities Center.
