Position Description:

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a ten-month, full-time opening in the Arts and Humanities Department as a history instructor beginning January 2015.

ASMSA is a public, residential high school for academically talented and motivated eleventh and twelfth grade students from across Arkansas. In 2014, ASMSA was ranked among the nation’s Top 10 secondary schools in The Daily Beast’s annual survey of “America’s Top High Schools.” ASMSA’s “college bridge” program offers advanced high school coursework as well as university coursework through partnerships with other Arkansas colleges and universities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ASMSA’s faculty guide a course load of five classes each semester.

As a residential community of learning, ASMSA’s core philosophy values the development of students’ interests and talents beyond the classroom. As such, faculty are expected to support student research, provide tutoring assistance, facilitate successful transitions for incoming juniors, promote the school through outreach programs and contribute to the residential experience.


A Master’s degree in history or a related area is required, including at least eighteen graduate hours in history. The successful candidate must have the ability to teach courses in world civilizations, government, and electives in their areas of personal interest. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curriculum, team planning skills and problem solving skills.

Preferred qualifications include an earned doctorate and three years of teaching experience.

Candidate must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident. The estimated salary range is $43,000 to $47,000.
